The Aoraki team have had pivotal roles in the delivery of an impressive portfolio of commercial projects through their senior roles with some of Wellington’s top tier main contractors.  Here is a selection!

Taranaki Base Hospital - $58M - 2014

In his role as Bid Manager, Chris led the bid team to secure the project, then when the contract was awarded Chris was appointed as Project Manager. While he had not headed up a project of this scale previously, his track record of successful delivery, relevant experience (particularly his key role in the delivery of the $175M new Regional Hospital in Wellington), and his ability to understand complex projects saw him well-equipped to lead the team and the relationship with this important Client.

“Clinical Hospital buildings are exceptionally complex and over the period of construction, technology changes rapidly, much of which has to be incorporated with little change to the allowable construction budget.  Chris – I have no doubt that you made many of these variations occur with considerable goodwill to the DHB.  We now have a building we can be very proud of.” - Richard Guy, Facilities Overseer, Taranaki District Health Board

Main Contractor: The Fletcher Construction Company Ltd

Client: Taranaki District Health Board

This brand new Acute Services Building included six operating theatres, procedure suite, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, recovery suite, Sterile Services Department, and six wards providing 172 beds across 11,000m2 of clinical space.

The complex structure is a combination of piled, ground beam and pad foundations with a reinforced concrete and structural steel frame and double-T precast floor systems. The envelope is an engineered unitised façade by Thermosash incorporating terracotta tiles and aluminium planks, plus Bondor sandwich panels to the new Entry Link.

Boulcott Conference Suites - $16M - 2016

Main Contractor: Arrow International (NZ) Ltd

Client:  Rolle Consultancy & Management Ltd, Village Accommodation Group

Located on the busy corner of Boulcott Street and Willis Street and constructed concurrently while three other major projects were underway within 50m of the site, the logistics and coordination with various stakeholders and neighbours provided a challenge during the construction of this building.  The result was a smart and unique 5-star apartment hotel designed and fully furnished with elegance and style.

As Arrow’s Estimator and Commercial Manager, Nigel was responsible for the original pricing of this project, where his specialised apartment construction cost knowledge took effect

in ensuring construction methods and materials were procured to find cost savings and efficiencies.

Xero 2 - $25M - 2017

Main Contractor: Arrow International (NZ) Ltd

Client:  The Wellington Company

Xero 2 is a landmark office building on the busy corner of Wellington’s Taranaki Street and Wakefield Street.  The construction was a complex combination of seismic strengthening, retention of the existing 2 storey heritage façade, gutting of the interior and an additional 3 floors with a modern stamisol façade.  The result was a 5-storey office building housing 600 staff for one of NZ’s proudest and most known companies – Xero.

As General Manager and Commercial Manager for Arrow’s Wellington business, Chris and Nigel were instrumental in the procurement and delivery of this complex project, which included

negotiating the interior fitout works package direct with Xero as the building’s new tenant.

Rydges Hotel, Wellington Airport - $40M - 2019

Main Contractor:  Arrow International (NZ) Ltd

Client:  Wellington International Airport Ltd

The new Rydges Hotel at Wellington Airport is a four-star 134-bed hotel inter-connected with the airport terminal at its northern end – the first of its kind in NZ.  The new hotel building structure is a structural steel building with K bracing in the short direction and moment frames in the long direction.  Clad with Resene Rockcote Integra panels and strip aluminium windows, the building stands out well in the airport landscape.  Level 2 provides a full commercial kitchen and restaurant, as well as a conference centre through the integration with the terminal.

Shortly after taking up the position of General Manager for Arrow’s Wellington business, it was Chris’s strong relationship with Wellington Airport that enabled Arrow to secure the Main Contract for construction of this high-profile project.

DXN Apartments - $40M - 2019

Main Contractor: Arrow International (NZ) Ltd

Client: 111 Dixon Street Ltd

Standing at over 55m tall, the DXN development has created 228 new apartments adding to the new wave of Wellington inner-city living.  Comprised of 114 dual key units, this 20 storey apartment block is split into 3 self-sufficient towers (each fed by its own lift & stairwell) split by two concrete shear walls.  The development was permitted extra height through design excellence, as it provided a laneway between Dixon Street, and courtyards for the ground floor retail on the west, as well as balconies to a number of the units.

“so much innovation, the innovation was staggering” - Kirk Sutton, Site Manager, Arrow International Ltd (now Aoraki Senior Site Manager)
